  3. The Pioneers of La Loma Village

Post date:

Nineteen years ago, residents began moving into the brand-new La Loma Village, a Sun Health Life Care community. This initial group of residents would become the pioneers of the community.

As they shared meals, the residents began forging friendships that would grow into a tight-knit community, feeling more like a family with each passing day.

“We all knew each other; it was like a family,” Lorraine, a La Loma Village pioneer, said. “Everybody helped everybody else. We all ate together. It was just family. It was just home, with a lot of people around all in the same boat.”

Everything, from the construction of the building to the activities and clubs for the residents, was built from the ground up. The residents themselves initiated various groups and activities based on shared interests. From cards to plays to line dancing, there was an activity for everyone, including activities to show gratitude toward the staff.

“Creating the Employee Appreciation Fund is my greatest accomplishment,” pioneer Sue S. said. “We have maintained it as a truly resident-run program. It really is important.”

But what brought these pioneers to La Loma Village?

After seeing the advertisements and flyers and viewing the models at this brand-new Life Plan community, they were sold on the carefree lifestyle La Loma Village promised.

As the years have passed and the community has expanded, new residents have moved in, enriching the existing group.

“You get to meet new people with new ideas,” pioneer Sue L. said. “From my point of view, they are always younger. You get to interact with lots of other people and make friendships.”

Through everything, the residents have remained a steadfast presence. For the last 19 years, they have transformed La Loma Village into more than just a place to live – it’s become their community, a place of friendships, and a cherished home. They laid the foundation for the culture that exists today.

“La Loma is a very special place,” Sue S. said. “It’s a family – it really is. From the first moment people walk through the door, they are made to feel at home. People are naturally friendly.”
