Do You Need a Certified Health Coach? As we age, our health needs change and, often, our activity level declines. After years of a busy career, raising a family and other life obligations, many people allow exercise and healthy eating to fall to the wayside. However, if there was ever a time when you needed to make your health a priority, it’s now. As an older adult, you’re more susceptible to chronic conditions and diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and more.

Preventive care can help you avoid these concerns, improve your energy level, increase your life expectancy and enhance mental health—and a certified health coach (CHC) can help you stay on track.

If you’ve never worked with a health coach before, you may be unsure as to whether it’s necessary. Today we’re going to discuss what a CHC does, how they can help you and whether or not you should work with one.

What is a Certified Health Coach?

A health coach is a healthcare professional with an undergraduate or graduate degree in a relevant discipline such as nursing, nutrition, psychology, exercise science or counseling. Health coaches become certified through the National Society of Health Coaches (NSHC) or the American Council on Exercise (ACE). This expert works with older adults to assess their current health through screenings, assist in outlining a health plan and setting attainable goals, and offer one-on-one health counseling and diet and exercise advice.

While a CHC is not a replacement for a physician, they can help you on a path to a healthier and more active lifestyle that will increase the likelihood of continued independence.

How Will a Certified Health Coach Help Me?

A good CHC will do more than simply complete health screens and hand you a tedious health plan. Instead, they will assist you along the way. CHCs know everyone is different, and a plan that works well for some may not be the best solution for others. They will consider everything from your medical history and dietary preferences to your interests and hobbies to help you set goals that best suits you and your unique needs.

Your CHC will meet with you regularly to evaluate your progress and offer advice to ensure you meet your health goals. Health coaches are a great resource for professional health information between doctor’s visits, and can help you fulfill your wish to age in place.

Do I Really Need a Certified Health Coach?

Working with a CHC is beneficial for anyone of any age, but especially older adults. A CHC who is skilled in working with older retirees will be able to offer guidance best suited to your lifestyle and abilities, and address the needs and challenges you may face at this stage in life. For example, a CHC will recommend exercise that is appropriate for your level of fitness.

At the end of the day, only you can decide whether a certified health coach is best for you. However, working with a certified professional can have multiple positive and long-lasting benefits.
