  3. Making the Move: Your Guide for a Successful Transition to Independent Living

Post date:

Are you preparing to move into an independent living community but unsure of where to start in the transition process? Here are a few steps and resources to help you have a seamless move.

Downsize Your Items

In many cases, part of the process is downsizing the quantity of items you have. As you transition into a senior living community, your space will likely be smaller than your current home. You may have accumulated many things over the years, so it’s important to categorize all your belongings into items to keep, items to get rid of, and items to pass on to your children or family. Take your time with this process and enjoy reminiscing about your memories but stay focused on the task. Avoid creating a “maybe” pile of items during your sorting; this process will allow you to keep what items you need and let go of the rest.

If this feels daunting, you can work with a professional organizer and packer. They can help get started and walk you through the process. They can even work on sending some of your larger items to family members. The goal is to have a plan for all your items and where they will go.

Sell Your House

If you need to sell your house, consider whether you are in a rush to sell and want to sell it as is or would like to complete improvements and fixes to earn top dollar. It is important to allow enough time for any necessary repairs or upgrades to be completed within the timeline of your moving day. Pick a realtor who can assist you and answer your questions. A good realtor will be on your side and be able to help provide an outcome that works for you.

Selling your property would also help with any financial aspects of moving, so you want the sale to work best for you.

Move In

Once move-in day arrives, you will begin transporting everything to your new place.

If you hire a moving company, they will transfer your belongings into your new space and sometimes even set things up.

Good preparation and organization before the actual day will go a long way to ease the burdens and stress of the moving day. There is a lot of commotion and activity shuffling things around so having a good plan is key. Labels and color coordination of items is a good tactic.
