SURPRISE, Ariz.- Sept. 11, 2019 – Identity theft hit an all-time high with nearly 60 million Americans affected by it and nearly 15 million consumers experiencing it in 2017, according to The Harris Poll. Arizona ranks 10th in the nation for identity theft reports. There are actions you can take to reduce your risk, including secure disposal and shredding of your sensitive items. Plan to participate in a free Shred-A-Thon and Prescription Drug Take-Back Event open to the public:
- DATE – Saturday, Sept. 28
- TIME – 8 a.m. to noon
- LOCATION – Grandview Terrace, a Sun Health Community, 14515 W. Granite Valley Dr. in Sun City West
- NOTE – There is a five-box limit of paper/documents per person
“Sun Health is proud to once again partner with the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, AARP and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office to sponsor this event to help safeguard the personal information of Arizona residents,” said Grandview Terrace Executive Director Chuck Kerby. “Special thanks as well to volunteers from the Kiwanis Club of Sun City West and our Grandview Terrace staff who also will support the event.”
Since identity thieves often search through trash looking for confidential information, keep your identity safe by shredding documents that contain personal information, including:
- Bank and credit cards statements, credit card receipts, credit card applications
- Investment account statements
- Tax forms
- Medical bills
- Canceled or unused checks
- Old, expired driver’s licenses, medical insurance cards and passports
- Any documents or papers that contain your Social Security number, birth date, signature and account numbers, passwords or PINs.
Safely Dispose of Expired Prescription Drugs
During the event you can also safely dispose of your old, expired or unused prescription drugs at the event, which prevents misuse and abuse.
Collection Protocols:
- No liquids, needles, sharps, or inhalers.
- Controlled, non-controlled and over-the-counter substances may be collected.
- Participants may dispose of medication in its original container or by removing the medication from its container and disposing of it directly into the disposal box. If an original container is submitted, the individual should be encouraged to remove any identifying information from the prescription label.
